Speaker: Laurent Erdös

Bio: Laurent studied jazz drums and vibes (CIM Paris), classical percussion (X° conservatory, Paris), Latin Percussions (Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico and New York). He developed an international career playing vibes and timbales in several jazz and latin combos ; in later years, he turned his attention to piano playing. He conducted several big bands in France (Mambo Legacy, Mambomania, CNRS de Lille, CRR de Lille) and Spain (Terrassa Barcelona). In 2009, he founded the ABANICO salsa music school in Paris. He recorded several CDs dedicated to Afrocuban music. His most recent CD, Paris-Bronx Connection, has been recorded in December 2023 in New York.

Description/Abstract: The lecture will explore the various styles of salsa music in the 60s, from Africa, to Cuba, to New York, contextualizing the influence of cuban music in the early age of jazz and, on the other hand, the impact of jazz on salsa music. The lecture will be enriched with audio-video illustrations of various dance styles (Abakwa, Rumba, Son, Danzon, Mambo, Charanga, etc.). The participants will also have the opportunity to learn actively the main rhythmic patterns of afro-cuban music.
