Emerson Bodde

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

His research focuses on social and political philosophy generally, while often approaching a variety of topics like the epistemology of political systems, AI, and the ontology of social classes through historical and comparative methodologies. He is currently working on a book manuscript on the philosophy of social class. He has published articles in venues including Philosophy and Public Affairs, Synthese, Philosophy & Social Criticism, AI & Society, Asian Philosophy, and an edited volume, New Perspectives on the Ontology of Social Identities. In addition to more traditional historical and comparative scholarship on topics relating to social class, his recent work includes a paper on the unique properties of video games as an aesthetic form and how those properties enable new forms of classist discrimination in art. His teaching interests lie in the overlap of normative and political philosophy with political science, economics, and history, and thus contributes primarily to the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major.

He received his PhD in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, and a BA in History and Philosophy from Case Western Reserve University. Before joining Duke Kunshan University, he was a Lecturer at Clemson University.
