This panel discussion was very helpful for planning my studies for the summer and the fall semester. Dalia advised us to make steady progress every day, which reminded me of the importance of preparing research plans in advance—whether for the coming month or the next year—and carrying them out consistently. This advice is especially valuable for cultivating long-term thinking, since the seven-week course system often leads me to focus only on what is immediately ahead in the next few weeks. Dalia also emphasized the importance of drawing a clear boundary between study time and rest time. I found this insight particularly inspiring: recognizing that rest time is limited can, in turn, encourage greater efficiency in studying. Regarding stress relief, Amy suggested developing hobbies that can redirect one’s attention. Since I enjoy cycling very much, this should not be difficult for me. However, because cycling often takes several hours, I may also need to find other activities that require less time.

Dalia also advised us to choose a Signature Work topic that we are genuinely passionate about, although by that point my topic had already been finalized and could no longer be changed. For me, this is not a concern: my project focuses on the salt fields of my hometown, and I hope to make some contribution to the place where I grew up. Regarding research funding, I learned that SRS may provide some support, and that HRC also offers a certain amount of financial assistance. At present, apart from possible transportation and accommodation expenses for returning to my hometown to consult paper-based materials, I have not identified other necessary costs. However, if further needs arise, I will consider applying for additional funding.

I also asked AH whether there were any courses especially worth considering. The panelists recommended several options, but most of them were major-specific courses that I had already completed, so these suggestions were somewhat limited in helping me plan my future coursework.

Finally, the panelists also emphasized the importance of communicating with one’s Signature Work mentor in a timely manner in order to keep progress aligned. I have already arranged to meet with my professor after the May Day holiday to discuss my summer research plan in detail, so I believe I am prepared in this regard.
