Light-Year Transmission,” a captivating installation by Ziv Ze’ev Cohen, an innovative new media artist and assistant professor of Digital Media at Duke Kunshan University, has mesmerized attendees at the Qiandao Lake 2024 Light and Shadow Biennale, located in Zhejiang Province.

In collaboration with artist Xinyi Li, Cohen has crafted an engaging exhibit using 2,000 meters of reflective material, intricately woven over a 28-meter area to represent ancient Chinese poetry linked to the storied history of Chun’an, home to the renowned Qiandao Lake. This installation is set to be a highlight of the Light Art Biennale for a duration of two years.

The artwork is designed to come alive as visitors shine flashlights or other light sources along its path. As the light interacts with the threads, it unveils hidden designs and texts that fuse the present with echoes from bygone eras, offering an enveloping experience that stimulates the senses.

This installation is a testament to Cohen’s partnership with Li and is inspired by Octavio Paz’s idea that “Poetry is the secret story, the story behind the story, the reflection in the mirror of time. Through it, we communicate with our deepest selves and with others across the silent spaces of existence.”

Cohen, recognized internationally for his exhibitions, such as those at the Ars Electronica Festival and Chicago’s Gallery 062, consistently pushes the envelope of art, blurring the lines between tangible and digital realms. “Light-Year Transmission” is a reflection of this principle, merging historical reverence with contemporary creativity and encouraging public engagement with the enduring spirit of poetry and human storytelling through the prism of cutting-edge technology.
