*性/别: a term coined by scholars at the Center for the Study of Sexualities at National Central University in Taiwan by splitting the Chinese term “gender” (性別) and inserting a slash right in the middle (性/別) to keep in view the complexities of both gender and sexuality and other social constructs, social differences (別), in all related social analyses.
Speaker’s Bio
Huang Yingying is professor of Sociology Department, director of Institute of Sexuality and Gender, Renmin University of China. Her work focuses on FSWs, women’s body and sexualities, HIV/AIDS, and qualitative methodology. She is the author of the books Body, Sexuality and Xinggan (sexiness): Study on Chinese Women’s Daily Lives (2008), Sexuality/Gender, Body and Sociology of Story-telling (2018) and HIV/AIDS and The Way of Living (2019), and co-authored Changes in Sexualities: Chinese People’s Sexual Behaviors and Relationships in 21stcentury (2013), Field Notes on Doing Sexuality Research in Mainland China’(2018) among others. Dr. Huang is devoted in promoting sexuality research in China since 1999, including convening the biannual international conference on Sexualities in China & National Workshop on Sexuality Research in China (2007-2019). Her recent interests include the social history of sexualities (including knowledge producing) in China since 1980s, and how to talk about sexuality/gender issues in public.
